Personal Injury Protection
These days, depending on the type of daily driving activity you carry out, it is worth considering starting a personal injury protection plan. Families require looking after as do the payments for mortgages etc. so if for no other reason than ensuring these are looked after, it has got to be worth it. If you have no family responsibilities then you may decide to arrange personal injury protection (PIP) just for your own benefit. Unfortunately, any insurance policy is expensive (no matter how important) and many of the most vulnerable families that this would benefit just cannot afford to add another plan to their portfolio.
It is important to remember the protection should cover everything that is required otherwise it is a waste of time and money. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. This difference is highlighted by the amount of cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount required by a similar driver in Florida. So even if you are fortunate to reside in a state where personal injury protection is not presently a legal requirement, it might be worth considering it for the future.
A large amount is paid out against these plans for the insured and any person traveling with them, up to four fifths of the costs. These costs include medical bills, lost wages and other assorted expenses because it is termed a ‘no-fault policy', so it covers you and your passengers, even if the fault was yours. As there can be considerable costs involved with purchasing this type of cover it is worth looking carefully at any current insurance policies you have to see if any of those areas are already catered for; which could lower the amount of protection cover you would need if you took out a new plan. Items like the medical expenses and lost income are already part of a current health plan that is in force.
If you were to find that this was case then you may not require a personal injury plan at all or only a minimal cover one at worst. Your current driving record may also determine whether you need to organize personal injury protection. If you carry passengers on a regular basis your health insurance might cover your own medical expenses, it won't however, cover those of your passengers (unless they are members of your family who are on your health plan). If, after checking your current health insurance you find that passengers are not protected by the policy you will be required to ensure they are covered by a personal injury protection plan in the event of an accident.
Any passenger in your vehicle should feel safe so it is the driver's responsibility to ensure this is the case. Just because your state does not make it compulsory to have a personal injury protection plan in force, does not mean you should neglect your civic responsibilities towards others. Many drivers find they only require minimal injury cover as they are middle aged, experienced drivers with a good record and already have an adequate health insurance plan in force. Whatever your circumstances, you need to research it carefully so that you can rest easy knowing that you and your passengers are safely covered.
